VALERIA
"To be called Valeria Home, after my dear wife." - John Langeloth

It all began with an idea
The Valeria Home was established in Cortlandt in 1924 by Valeria Knapp Langeloth with money set aside by her husband, American industrialist Jacob Langeloth, in his will. Its goal was to provide moderate-income persons "of education and refinement" rest and relaxation at a price they could afford. Located on over 500 acres, the home featured lovely accommodations, mountain trails, boating, outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, library and a Field House. The home closed in 1973, when the Langeloth Foundation was no longer able to subsidize it. Today it is a private residential community.

Valeria visited the resort every Sunday, hosting a concert series performed on a mechanical organ for the pleasure of her guests.
In Valeria's words...
The object of Valeria Home is rather the prevention than the cure of illness. Rest, recreation in pleasant surroundings, good food, happy and healthful group life - these are what Valeria Home offers at a cost which grants each guest the self-respect of paying his way, without either charity or exorbitant expense.
